CNY's Haunted History

There's nothing quite like a ghost story to get you in the Halloween spirit -- and in CNY, there's no shortage of haunts to keep you awake at night. From highway horrors to theatre frights, here's some history of haunted spots in the area.
The "Eerie" Canal
The Erie Canal is a CNY icon; it's no wonder why there's a museum dedicated to its history. But along with the cultural significance inside the museum's walls, some say there's something -- or someone -- else that calls it home. The Haunted History Trail of New York State says the museum is home to several ghosts: arguing men, transluscent children, and footsteps that echo through the halls when nobody is there. With so much history attached to the building, it may be that some of the history has stuck around.
Onondaga's Haunted Hill
A winding stretch of road southwest of Syracuse doubles as a "hot bed for paranormal activity". Cedervale Road was the site of a deadly car accident decades ago -- now, the spirits of the victims are said the haunt the stretch of road, appearing around the curves.
Theatrical Frights
Downtown Syracuse's Landmark Theatre is home to more than just muscials -- some say a spirit has haunted the theatre for nearly 100 years. As the story goes, a young woman named "Clarissa" fell to her death from a balcony in the theatre; her ghost has wandered the building ever since. Next time you catch a show, keep an eye out for a pale apparition in a white dress -- Clarissa may be watching the show with you.
A Haunted Hotel
And of course, you can't mention Syracuse haunts without mentioning the Marriot Syracuse Downtown -- formerly known as the Hotel Syracuse. The hotel garnered some national attention when rapper Lil Wayne stayed in one of its rooms and reported suspicious sounds. A "lady in blue" is said to haunt the hotel's ballroom and upper floors.
So as Halloween hits full stride, know that Central New York has plenty of haunts and horrors to keep the holiday's "spirit" alive.
